Gladys Stone Story

In the 1940s on a Sunday lunch time by the Nene Backwaters in Ailsworth, Arthur Chilvers aged 20 and a novice swimmer got into difficulties in what was, and is still, a deep section of water where the current swirls around a sharp bend. Fresh from Church Gladys Stone dressed in a new emerald green suit, hard earned with rationed coupons, jumped in fully clad to pull him to the shore. He was never quite forgiven and the spoiling of the suit was talked of many times during their 47 years of marriage.
