I am offering you a poem inspired by the river around Rivergate in Peterborough.
Nene Poem
Cardinal Cox
Khaki waves lap on muddy shores
Trapping swan feathers and beer cans
A child throws seeds for waterfowl
That gather with menace
Sun strikes low - turning
Scum to rainbow hues
Young have swum and swallowed
This stream for centuries
Slow fish stalk through this weed
Shadows cast from iron railway bridge
Willow tree, Customs House, steel crane
In the depths shopping trolley rests
On Civil War musket balls
Norman penny on Roman horseshoe
And deeper still - a log boat
Lingers in embracing mud
