People would skate on the frozen Nene (1890 - 1910). Men would race from Northampton to Peterborough. (Old wooden skates still survive - Irthlingborough Historical Society and Ringstead History Society have some). The skills gained by the ice skating led to roller skating rinks opening in Irthlingborough (Headlands Carpets premises).
